Nationalmuseum will continue with its rich selection of art and design exhibitions in the museum building on Blasieholmen in Stockholm next year.

The year begins with the opening of the Zorn – a Swedish Superstar exhibition, based on the 100th anniversary since Anders Zorn’s passing – an exhibition that needed to be postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic. Snowcrash, an exhibition about the Finnish design collective, which was also postponed will now be exhibited this spring. Autumn continues with the exhibition Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890–1980, which is a collaboration with the National Museum in Oslo, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Zorn – a Swedish Superstar

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the passing of Anders Zorn, Nationalmuseum is putting on a major exhibition about his artistry and oeuvre. With more than 200 works, it will be the first really substantial presentation in Sweden in many years. It will be possible in the exhibition to follow Zorn’s career and artistic development in two major parts, the first illustrating the period from 1878 to about 1900, and the second primarily works from the latter part of Zorn’s life. The exhibition is a collaboration with Kunstmuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands, where it is on show in autumn 2020, and the Zorn Museum in Mora.

Snowcrash

Snowcrash was the name of a Finnish design collective established an idea laboratory for future-oriented design which was later transformed into a Swedish design company. The collection, which was established over the course of 1997 to 2003, is being exhibited at Nationalmuseum for the first time. During the latter part of the 1990s, Finland and Sweden were regarded as pioneers in the development of Internet and wireless communications. At that time, ideas and concepts about a mobile, connected lifestyle and working remotely were born. Snowcrash experimented with hardware technology and software techniques, natural and synthetic materials, and created objects by linking technology to form, function and future that remind us of what is possible if one looks at the future with optimism. The exhibition has been curated based on a concept developed by Gustaf Kjellin and Ilkka Suppanen in collaboration with Nationalmuseum.

Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890–1980

Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890–1980 examines how concepts and design from the Nordic countries influenced and shaped modern American design culture, and vice versa how influences from the United States have influenced Nordic design. The exhibition is a collaboration between Nationalmuseum, the National Museum in Oslo, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Over 200 objects are being exhibited with themes exploring such topics as migration and cultural heritage, diplomacy and trade, education and professional exchanges, as well as design for accessibility and a socially and materially sustainable future.
