The exhibition was on display from June 2018 to May 2019 at Nationalmuseum Jamtli, Östersund.
Each age has its own art, which at that particular time is the latest, most spectacular and most modern. This exhibition takes us on a journey into contemporary art from the 16th century until the present day.
Along an imagined time line, we follow the major elements of European art history. Thematic digressions broaden and deepen the perspective. We are given an insight into what influenced art at various time, as well as who and why. There is a total of around 180 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and handicraft and design artefacts. They recount our history over six centuries.
The pieces of art in the exhibition are all key works in the Nationalmuseum’s collections. This is the first time that such a significant part of Sweden’s national art and design collection will be on display outside Stockholm.

20th Century Luxury Functionalism

Today, we communicate in a more intense way than ever before. A brooch can tell you something about its wearer and crafts and designs are often used for political messages or as comments on current phenomena.
