Hubert Robert’s pictorial world

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

Works by the artistic jack of all trades Hubert Robert (1733–1808) would have fitted naturally into Gustav III’s collection, but are not to be found there. The nearest we get is a copy belonging to the king’s brother, Duke Karl. Robert’s art nevertheless represents something essential in 18th-century Europe. Early on, he specialised in painting capriccio, fantasy scenes combining ruins and monuments. Robert also worked with related themes, such as fire and destruction. In addition, his artistic credentials helped secure him work as a garden designer.

Title: View of the Grotto and the Rustic Bridge in the Landscape Garden at Méréville

In a letter to Rosalie de Laborde in spring 1790, Hubert Robert wrote that he had received many visitors in his studio, who had come to admire his paintings from Méréville. The views probably included this painting of the grotto, which was one of Robert’s creations.

View of the Park of Méréville

Artist: Hubert Robert

Title: View of the Park of Méréville

Description:

Hubert Robert, also known as “Robert des ruines”, is associated with picturesque views from Rome. Soon after his return to France in 1765, he received commissions to design gardens. Robert used his paintings both as advertising images to show to clients and as working documents for his various collaborators. These two views show several different features which Robert created in 1786–94 for the marquis-banker Jean-Joseph de Laborde at Méréville.

The Fire of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris 1772

Artist: Hubert Robert

Title: The Fire of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris 1772

Description:

In his paintings of Paris, Robert often focused on violent and destructive moments of great change, such as fires. The Hôtel-Dieu hospital was gutted in a fire one night. Robert was on the scene early, collecting witness accounts and making drawings of the ruins. The orange flames and the thick grey-black smoke contrast powerfully and dramatically with the pitch black backdrop where we can make out the towers of Nôtre Dame.
