Six Centuries of Contemporary Art: 18th Century – Talent and Taste

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

During the 18th century the arts flourished after a long period of war. The construction of the royal palace resumed and became a nursery for artists. Importing art works and recruiting French artists and craftsmen were equally important for spreading the Rococo style in Sweden. Techniques for glass and porcelain manufacturing were developed.

The cult of reason and talent came from France with the Enlightenment philosophers. They were admired by the Swedish elite, with the royal house at the forefront. The flowering of cultural life continued during the Gustavian era, which coincided with Neoclassicism in the arts.

Leda and the Swan

Artist: François Boucher

Title: Leda and the Swan

Description:

Maybe more than any other artist, Boucher exemplifies the style later called Rococo. It is characterized, among other things, by bright colours and graceful shapes. The subjects were still taken from mythology, but turned into sensual scenes in idyllic settings. This piece shows how Zeus, transformed into a swan, seduces Princess Leda. The woman next to her has been interpreted as a companion, a twin, or perhaps a reflection of herself.
