Hedvig Eleonora (1636–1715) är en av de mest tongivande kvinnorna i svensk historia. Under nästan sex decennier var hon en politisk maktfaktor – hon överlevde såväl maken Karl X Gustav som sonen Karl XI och ingick i förmyndarregeringarna för både Karl XI och sonsonen Karl XII. Hennes inflytande sträckte sig även över konst och kultur, inte minst genom flera omfattande byggnadsprojekt. Framför allt lätt hon uppföra Drottningholms slott, vars prakt hade som syfte att befästa kungamakten.
Hennes långa liv och insatser gjorde henne till en symbol för kontinuitet och stabilitet under en tid av stora utmaningar. I denna visning undersöker vi hur Hedvig Eleonoras arv lever vidare i Nationalmuseums samlingar, samt vilken typ av estetik som förespråkades av stormaktsdrottningen.
