Lennart Nilsson är en av Sveriges mest kända fotografer. Sommaren 2022 kunde du se ett tjugotal av hans berömda porträtt av kungligheter, kultpersonligheter och politiker i en utställning på Gripsholms slott i Mariefred.
Den 24 augusti 2022 var det 100 år sedan Lennart Nilsson föddes. Han kom till världen i Strängnäs, inte långt från Gripsholm. Nilsson är en av Sveriges mest kända fotografer, såväl inom landet som internationellt. Hans verk omfattar allt från kungliga porträtt till reportage om livet i hans samtid och vetenskapliga bilder av människans inre.
Lennart Nilsson började sin bana som reportagefotograf under 1940-talet. Genom åren kom han att arbeta för flera av dåtidens stora bildtidningar, bland andra svenska Se och Veckojournalen samt amerikanska Life. Arbetet förde honom över stora delar av världen, alltifrån Kongo till Ishavet.
Bakgrunden i reportagefotografi förklarar varför det blev just Nilsson som utförde det första riktigt närgångna porträttet av en svensk monark. Till skillnad från dåtidens hovporträttörer, var han inte uppfostrad till att hålla en respektfull distans till den höge modellen. Utan att brista i hänsyn gentemot sitt fotoobjekt, åstadkom den unge fotografen ett inträngande och fascinerande porträtt av Gustav V, där ljuset och skuggorna tecknar den gamle kungens ansikte. Uppdragen för kungahuset fortsatte såväl med officiella förlagor till frimärken som mer informella bilder av de kungliga i arbete och fritid.
När Svenska Institutet skulle presentera landet i omvärlden genom boken Sweden in Profiles (1954) uppdrogs åt Nilsson att avporträttera berömdheter inom kultur, vetenskap och näringsliv. Detta fortsatte han med, parallellt med reportage och ett begynnande intresse för naturvetenskaplig fotografi. Från slutet av 1950-talet blev en ny specialitet att utföra stora grupporträtt. Bland annat gjordes två generalmönstringar av 1910-talets och 1950-talets svenskar, samlade för avporträttering i det då nya Moderna Museet i Stockholm.
I Statens porträttsamling ingår idag drygt femtio verk av Lennart Nilsson. Inför utställningen Kungar i svart och vitt på Gripsholms slott år 2006 skänkte han sju porträtt av Carl XVI Gustaf samt dennes farfar och farfarsfar. Fyra år senare kompletterades denna gåva med en större donation, bestående av 45 porträtt från 1950- till 1970-tal. Senare har enstaka gåvor och inköp tillkommit.
Sommaren 2022 visades en utställning på Gripsholms slott med ett urval av dessa, omkring 20 porträtt, främst av kungahus, kulturpersonligheter och politiker. Utställningen sammanföll med att Statens porträttsamling fyllde 200 år.
